All bloggers like statistics. We like seeing the number of people subscribing, the number of visitors and basically anything else to do with our blogs. I’m definitely no exception to this, every day I look at my statistics at least once and sometimes way more than once. This is fine as long as you realize that your blog statistics are going to fluctuate. You can’t expect to get the same number of readers day in and day out, especially if you don’t release articles on a regular basis.

So what are the benefits of statistics?

  1. They Help you Focus: Seeing your readers increase is a great way to keep you focused. When you see people reading your blog it drives you to create more content and do a better job.
  2. They Help you Earn Money: Once you know the number of visitors you can ask to be compensated fairly for advertising you run on your site or feed.
  3. They Help you Plan Accordingly: Knowing which articles are read the most can help you plan what to write for your blog. If people are reading a topic more so than the others maybe you should write more about it.

The great thing about your statistics are that you can have a say on how they turn out. By creating weekly, monthly and yearly goals you can strive to increase the number of readers or the number of pages per visit. Now when you’re creating your goals you should take a few things into mind:

  1. Be Realistic: If you’re averaging 100 visitors per day in January you can’t really expect to average 5000 in February. Keep your goals realistic so you’re not disappointed if you can’t meet them.
  2. You Need to Try Hard: Making your goal is only half the battle (or even less). Once you’ve made it you need to strive to accomplish it. Let’s say you make the goal of having 50 more visitors on average per day. Maybe you should go out and comment on a bunch of other people’s blogs. Or maybe you should write an extra article a day. Brainstorm ways of accomplishing your goals.
  3. Don’t Stop: Once you’ve accomplished your goal DON’T STOP. Blogging is like growing a tree. You need to continue to fertilize it (write posts) and nurture it (design?) to keep it going. If you stop worrying about your blog once you’ve met your goals it’ll die. People will get uninterested and you could lose readers.

So now that I’ve gave a few tips on how to use statistics and make goals to help your blog along I’m going to give out my August statistics and September goals. Now keep in mind that I moved my blog to this new location on the 8th so these statistics are technically only for 24 days and not the whole month.

August Statistics:
Visitors: 2853
Page Views: 4011
PV per Visit: 1.405
PV per Day: 167
Visitor per Day: 118
Time on the Site: 1:39

September Goals:

  1. Get over 3300 visitors and 5000 page views.
  2. Increase the average visitors time on the site to 2 minutes or more.

So as you can see I’d like to have the avg page views per visitor to be almost 2 pv’s per visitor. I’d like to see over 3000 visitors and 6000 page views as well as the average time of a person visiting my site increased to 2 minutes. How am I going to do that you may ask? Well I’m going to continue writing articles and try to increase it to at least an article every other day. I’m also going to continue writing tutorials (this is where I get most of my search engine hits from). Finally I’m going to continue to expand my presence in the blogging community by posting comments and getting myself known.

If you want your blog to prosper, reading your statistics and creating goals for yourself is a great start.
